So let’s get into it.

RULE #1: THE CUSTOMER DOESN’T CARE ABOUT YOU.

This rule sounds mean, but you have to give the customer what they want.

Don’t make your copy about you. In fact, when you write, write as if this is just meant for one person. The customer should know that this is for him or her. Let’s go back to the intro of this article:

“Do you want to become a copywriter? Do you want to rake in lots of cash by learning one skill? A skill that will allow you to work from wherever you want? Charge clients an extra $1000 to $10000 a month?”

This is for the person who’s interested in copywriting. They don’t care that it took hours to write this.

They only care about the “7 Golden Copywriting Rules For Beginners to Make Money Every Time.”

So don’t talk about yourself or your company too much. Focus on the customer and what they came here for.

#RULE 2: READ ALL OF YOUR COPY OUT LOUD!

If you do this, you’ll immediately improve as a copywriter. Copywriting is about getting information from one brain to another. So this has to be smooth and simple. And you don’t have to follow proper grammar all the time. Your copy should be conversational.

Whenever you finish a draft…

READ. IT. OUT. LOUD

And make sure every word flows naturally. If you read your copy and you stutter just once, fix it.

Your writing should sound like it’s ready for video.

More importantly, reading your copy out loud automatically puts you in the active voice. With the active voice, the subject performs the action. This gives your writing a sense of power and control like that of a master Samurai. The active voice makes your writing more direct, impactful and deadly sharp.

Just sing out the words, “I shot the sheriff” by Bob Marley. That’s the power of the active voice.

With the passive voice, the action is performed by the subject. But this is a formal, vague, and clunky way of writing. And it can make your writing boring. Avoid this as much as possible.

Now sing out, “The sheriff was shot by me.”

Not as impactful, is it? There’s a reason Bob Marley didn’t write it that way.

The passive voice has its uses. But when you want to write effective ad copy that strikes emotion, stick to the active voice.

So whenever you finish that first draft. Read it out and make sure you:

  • write the way you talk (Imagine you’re sitting at the diner with your friends having a conversation)
  • keep it super simple
  • use the active voice. Don’t get used by the passive voice.
  • can read through all of the copy smoothly.

Do this and you’ll become an amazing speaker as well. This will keep your readers hanging on every word and more likely to buy.

The active voice gives your words power and control like that of a master samurai
Read your copy out loud  to use the power and control of the active voice like a samurai!

#RULE 3: READ AND WRITE COPY EVERY DAY!

Make sure you read about copywriting and write your own stuff. To get this ball rolling, you can:

  • take a copywriting course (Free or Paid)
  • watch copywriting videos
  • join a copywriting group
  • follow mentors or experts in your field
  • read copywriting blogs
  • write about your favorite topics, your offers, and write for clients that need copy!
  • spend 15-30 minutes writing sales letters and emails (You can even work on your dating profile or cover letter)

When you do this, you’ll start to get an ear for copy.  And you’ll notice how copywriting is strongly related to how we sell to each other all the time.

It’s not just in marketing but in movies, songs, and video games as well.

Did you know one of the best movie lines of all time also worked as copy and a damn good pitch? The simple phrase:

Come with me if you want to live” by the Terminator is good copy. Because nobody wants to get killed by a shape-shifting robot. That’s a strong pitch and close.

So read and write copy everyday. It will train you on how to persuade, sell, and solve your prospect’s problems.

Rule #4: LEARN THE BASIC COPYWRITING STRUCTURES:

Like with any skill, there are some basics. And you have to know basic copywriting structures such as:

  • AIDA (ATTENTION | INTEREST | DESIRE | ACTION)
  • PAS (PROBLEM | AGITATE | SOLVE)
  • 4 Ps (PICTURE | PROMISE | PROOF | PITCH)

Let’s go back to the intro again. You’ll see how these copywriting structures were used to build the copy for this article:

ATTENTION (grab the reader’s attention, usually asking them a question in the lead works every time)

Do you want to become a copywriter?

Do you want to learn a high cash raking skill?

INTEREST (pique the reader’s interest. I do this by telling them how they can earn from $1000 to $10,000 a month with copywriting)

A skill that will allow you to work from wherever you want? Charge clients an extra $1000 to $10000 a month?

That sounds nice doesn’t it?

Yeah it does.

PROBLEM (state the problem the beginner copywriter might experience)

But you don’t know where to begin? You don’t have any experience, connections or samples.

AGITATE (twist the reader’s pain point a little by saying how intimidating it can get and that they are probably broke. It’s just a little salt on their wounds)

It all seems intimidating. And if you’re reading this, you’re probably broke or struggling financially.

SOLVE (provide the solution and lead in to the 7 golden rules they can follow to become better)

Well none of that matters. Anybody can become a copywriter if they really want.

Copywriting is just getting information from one brain to another. It’s designed to persuade with useful information to sell products and services

And even though you may be a beginner…

All you have to do is follow these 7 golden copywriting rules that will shoot you up from noob to a solid, competent, and high level copywriter in less than a month..

PICTURE & PROMISE / DESIRE (paint a picture of how they’ll become great copywriters and also make it a promise. This should also create desire for them to keep reading)

You’ll grow your skills and become a person of value. You’ll consult marketers and clients on how to scale their business. And give them the copy they need to convert their customers. This way, you get paid and roll in the dough.

PITCH / ACTION (Tell them what you want them to do)

All you have to do is share this article and sign up for The Copy Cartel email list!

So whenever you write copy, you don’t have to stare at a blank screen. Use these structures to help build the skeleton of your copy. You can use AIDA, PAS, or the 4 P’s. You can even combine them as well.

All these structures help provide valuable information for the customer and create a smooth journey from pitch to close like a playground slide.

And it helps you write copy super fast!

Copywriting structures work as building blocks for good copy

Rule #5: MAKE A SWIPE FILE

A Swipe File is when you have a folder or online storage of tested and proven copy you can use as a template or guide. You should swipe copy so you can study it and use it for inspiration. It will save you a lot of time.

So swipe tested and money-raking copy. Also swipe new copy that makes you:

  • laugh
  • cry (in a good way, like tears of joy, empathy, benevolence)
  • Read or watch from start to finish
  • terrifies you
  • buy

Don’t just copy the same idea or concept. Expert copywriters and savvy customers can spot that a mile away. And it’s just not cool.

Swiping copy is about having a guideline and model for good copy that sells.

RULE #6: STATE THE BENEFITS TOO, NOT JUST THE FEATURES

This is a very big rule when it comes to selling. Features are what the product does. And benefits are what the features will do for the customer.

It’s not enough to sell the customer on the features of the product. You must also show the benefits.

There was one time Elon Musk tried to sell investors on PayPal on its features and here’s what he said…

“We have a tightly integrated financial infrastructure that can process all your banking needs under a single financial institution.”

Okay…

What the hell does that mean?

But when you pivot to PayPal’s benefits, what Elon Musk meant to say is…

That means we can send money to your email address.

Yes?

That way, you can send money to anyone all over the world without huge bank wire fees.

Yes??

This way, your mom can get all the money she needs when you send it to her instantly.

Yes???

That means you’ll be the hero who cares about taking care of family, financially. FAST.

Boom!

When you write copy for a service or product, you focus on the benefits. You need to focus on how this product and service will improve the customer’s life or solve a problem they have.

Remember, nobody wants to buy anything from you unless they have to. So if they do buy it has to be something of value.

If it doesn’t hit a pain point, a motivator or solve their problem, they won’t care.

So don’t only tell what the product does with the features, Show them how the product will better their life.

Better copywriting = More sales = More Freedom.

Rule #7: HEADLINES MUST BE USEFUL, URGENT, ULTRA-SPECIFIC, and UNIQUE

The whole point of the headline is to stop the readers in their tracks and get them to read the first line, then the second and keep them moving all the way down to the close; much like a slide.

So make sure it’s a fun and valuable experience.

Because headlines are used as a qualifier. It lets readers know if your product is for them or not. That’s why you need to make sure your headlines follow this criteria

Are they:

  • Useful?
  • Urgent
  • Ultra-Specific
  • Unique?

Most of the time, only 20 percent of people will go on to read after the headline. This is why your headline needs to touch on all of the 4 U’s if possible.

Let’s take a look at the headline again:.

7 Golden Copywriting Rules For Beginners to Make Money Every Time

Is the headline useful?

Yes. If you’re a beginner copywriter, you might want to read this. This is useful to you if you want to sell or persuade customers, EVERY TIME!

Is the headline Urgent?

Not really. There’s no urgent time metric. But in the sense that you’re trying to sell every time then maybe.

Is it Ultra-Specific?

Yes, it is. There are 7 golden copywriting rules that beginner copywriters should follow. This way they can just jump in, Even if they’ve never written copy.

Is it Unique?

Yes, this is tailored to beginner copywriters who can use these rules to persuade or sell to customers every time.

So when you write your headline, keep the 4 U’s in mind and make sure it reaches the audience you are looking for. Otherwise, you won’t stop anyone in their tracks.

With the 4 U’s, they must also solve a problem, make a promise or provide value that your readers can use immediately!

So there you have it. The seven golden rules all beginner copywriters must use to sell or persuade every time.

Remember:

  • the customer doesn’t care about you; they only care about themselves (write with the customer in mind)
  • read your Copy out loud (so it can flow for easy storytelling)
  • read and write copy everyday (so you can develop a muscle for good copy)
  • learn the basic copywriting structures (AIDA. PAS or the 4 P’s) so you can write good copy FAST!
  • keep a swipe file so you can learn from successful sales copy.
  • state the benefits, not the just features so your customers can know how the product will make their life easier
  • make sure your headlines follow the 4 U’s (Useful, Ultra-Specific, Urgent, and Unique)

When you use the 7 Golden Copywriting Rules, you’ll close and make money every time.

That’s all for now.

Stay blessed…
